Touched India paper proof of a wood engraving by Swain after an illustration by W. Small for an unidentified publication.
Inscriptions/Markings
Proof inscribed with artist's directions to the engraver: Girl's hair fine [?] a little. This hand is not well engraved the outline is reduced to a stiff black line with no movement in it. Same with this foot. Grey the pupil of eyes.

Summary
A young woman, barefoot with her hair loose and her hands clasped to her shoulder, approaches the body of a young man who lies dead or unconscious in the undergrowth, with his dog at his side and a sword across his stomach.
