Renowned for his woodblock prints and book illustrations, Frasconi completed this portrait of Pablo Neruda in the year of Neruda's death. Neruda, whose poetry is quoted in Frasconi's inscription, was one of the most original and prolific twentieth-century poets of the Spanish language and was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1971. Frasconi often made portraits of contemporary artists and musicians as part of a body of work that was closely entwined with literarure and politics.

Numbered, signed, and dated by the artist, "7/20 Frasconi 73". Inscribed below image, "Ahora va de verás dijo la Muerte y a mi me parece que me miraba, me miraba."
