Gargantua and Chateau de Vede [printing plate].

Electrotype from an engraved block after Doré, with a design for an illustration for Gargantua et Pantagruel, created for Doré's illustrated edition of the collected works of François Rabelais. This electrotype was evidently employed for a later edition of the Doré Rabelais (Paris : Garnier Frères, [ca. 1880]) issued by the same publisher as the 1873 edition, with the Doré illustrations, but in a smaller format, with the plates cut down and the designs cropped to fit the reduced dimensions.
