Notes
The artistʼs enterprising studio, Braun et Cie, used new modes of photographic reproduction to reach a wide market. He even made photographs of paintings and sculptures in French collections for use by art history professors in the United States. This rare albumen print by Braun, whose livestock studies are more often carbon prints, exemplifies the effect of using a large aperture to achieve differential focus: the cow is sharply defined while everything else is blurred.
