Summary:

A version of the present painting, also in oil on panel, was sold at Christie's on 7 September 2005, lot 5. There it was described as a portrait of Mary Stuart (Mary, Queen of Scots; 1542-1587) and paired with a portrait of Francois II (1544-1560), both "in the manner of Francois Clouet" and framed in elaborate carved and gilded Florentine frames. The Morgan painting, like the one offered at sale, is among the many versions made in the manner of Clouet celebrating the marriage of the young couple in 1558.
