Notes
Watermark: MONTGOLFIER S A.
This sketchbook, compiled by the artist between 1875 and 1885, is composed of seventy-five drawings on forty-eight leaves, rebound in linen-clad boards. Cézanne used this linen-bound sketchbook for roughly a decade at a time when he was particularly engaged with drawing. It includes studies of the Provençal landscape, Paris rooftops, and informal portraits of his wife, son, and friends, such as Pissarro. This spread features a self-portrait juxtaposed with two studies of Émile Zola asleep. On other pages Cézanne depicted objects in Zola's house in Médan, revealing the intimacy of their friendship, which would be sundered by Zola's publication of L'oeuvre (The Masterpiece) in 1886. -- Exhibition Label, from "Drawn to Greatness: Master Drawings from the Thaw Collection"
