Benedictine monastery of St. Saviour at Anchin (Abbaye d'Anchin (Pecquencourt, France)) where the manuscript was made, with later Anchin notes of the 15th century; Sir Thomas Phillipps (his name and number 21948 inscribed on fol. 1r); bought privately from the Phillipps Collection by A. Chester Beatty (his W ms. 24 [alternatively W ms. 19; 91]), 17 December 1920, £285; his sale, London, Sotheby's, May 9, 1933, lot 42, £560 (bought by Quaritch); Charles Harry S. John Hornby (1867-1946), his bookplate, his no. 3230; his sale, London, Sotheby's, June 4, 1974, lot 2906, to the Library (purchased on the Fellows fund, with the special assistance of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Ms. Bible texts, with interlinear gloss and the Glossa ordinaria; written and decorated at the abbey of St. Saviour in Anchin, northeastern France, toward the end of Gossuin's abbacy (1131/3-1165).
Both inner and outer series of prickings preserved; collation: I8-XI8, XII6, XIII4, XIV6, XV8-XVIII8, XIX7.
Decoration: incipit and explicit for each book in large green and red capitals; 3 penwork historiated initials and 8 large decorated initials, all in red, green, and black ink, and 1 unfinished initial; 2 coats of arms, 2 figures and 2 monograms, all added later.
The decoration of M.962 is unfinished. 1 initial has not been completed.
