Provenance
Nearly-erased inscription on fol. 1r reads: Monasterii Weingartensis 1628; the manuscript is listed in the 1628 inventory of the library; remained at Weingarten until 1805, when the library was dispersed and the French generals Thibaut and Niboyet sold some of the books in Paris; probably in David S. Ker sale (London, Mar. 8, 1847, I, no. 186) and then purchased for Ashburnham; the Earl of Ashburnham Collection (appendix, no. 5); his sale (London, 1899, no. 3) to Quaritch (cat. 190, July, 1899, no. 2; facsimiles, I, 1900, plate 4); purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) from Quaritch in 1900; J.P. Morgan (1867-1943).

Ms. portion of the Old Testament; written and illuminated in the Benedictine Monastery of Weingarten in southern Germany, between 1109 and 1132, during the abbacy of Kuno von Waldenberg.
Pierpont Morgan Library MS M.11 is vol. 2 of a 3 volume Bible; vol. 1 is in London, British Library: MS Additional 14791; vol. 3 is in Fulda, Hessische Landesbibliothek Fulda: MS Aa 16.
Scribe: Uodalricus, Sator, and other scribes.
Decoration: 2 full-length and 7 smaller historiated initials in gold and silver heightened with red, green, blue, and white; four initials in red ink, unpainted.
The illumination of M.11 is unfinished. Four initials in red ink were not painted.
