Executed for Girolamo Mattia, prior of the church of Santa Maria della Scala of Milan; given by him to the Chapter of Santa Maria della Scala; later apparently in the library of a church of the Roman rite where an unsuccessful attempt was made to erase parts of the text to convert it to Roman use; owned in the 19th century by the Marquis Gerolamo d'Adda (1815-1881, bookplate inside front cover); C. Fairfax Murray; T. De Marinis (catalogue VIII (1908), no. 46 plate XI); purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) from De Marinis in 1909; J.P. Morgan (1867-1943).
