The card on which the hair is mounted reads, in Winthrop's hand, "A hair of Washington -- given to Bishop Whipple by Robt. C. Winthrop. January, 1887." Whipple has added, "and given by me to my dear friend [J. Pierpont Morgan]" and signed it "H. B. Whipple."

Summary
A single strand of George Washington's hair affixed with red wax to the verso of the calling card of Robert C. Winthrop. Winthrop removed this strand from a larger lock of Washington's hair.
