Binding
15th-century blind-tooled leather over partially-bevelled wooden boards (29.7 x 22.5 cm) on 3 double bands by the Medingen Dominican cloister workshop near Augsburg (EBDB w002366); repaired by Duprez Lahey. 2 clasps, wanting; catchplates (2.7 x 1.7 cm) stamped "maria." Kite-shaped corner bosses, with raised foliage and inscription around outer edge, "TVOT." Contemporary plain paper pastedowns. Modern (eighteenth/nineteenth-century?) shelf label on top board, "Incun. 2."
Inscriptions/Markings
Hand decoration: Rubricated, red lombards, paragraph marks, capital strokes, and underlining; hand-colored woodcuts. Annotations: A few marginal annotations throughout. Symbol inscribed to armorial in woodcut (leaf [1]/1v): Lambda with 2 crossed swords (Walther?).
Provenance
Marx Walther (of Augsburg, 1456-1511?), signature and purchase inscription: "das büch gestat 4 kreicer minde' 1 glos'," [i.e. "4 kreuzer less 1 groschen"] (front pastedown)--but looks like slightly different inks; Pierpont Morgan Library, purchased from Lathrop C. Harper, 1928.
