Notes
Steinberg's vast artistic output, which encompasses drawing, painting, sculpture and his legendary cartoons, reflects his architectural training, knowledge of art history and brilliant sense of humor. Born in Romania, Steinberg studied in Milan before growing anti-Semitism forced him to immigrate, first to the Dominican Republic and then to New York. He contributed drawings to several magazines, but it was his work for The New Yorker that would cement his popularity. This is a study for the drawing "Broadway" in the Morgan collection. It shows an architectural edifice constructed from the word "Trash" on which are written superlatives such as "Terrific!!" and "Sizzling," which are often used to describe theatrical productions.
