Notes
Lindner is best known for his vibrant colored paintings that combine human figures and machine parts. He began his career as a commercial illustrator and graphic designer for French, German, and American publications. Lindner left Germany n 1933 when Hitler rose to power, remaining in Paris until he was able to escape in 1941. He began his fine art career in New York in 1952. This drawing relates to a series of studies for a painting portraying the American movie star Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962). The painting was included in an exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery called "Homage to Marilyn Monroe" in 1967. Lindner published a poem in the exhibition catalogue: "smiling breasts / public lips / special delivery / HOLLYWOOD / disconnected / patrolman's walk / sleepless nude / NIGHT ANGEL / black exit / purple peace / perhaps!"
