Figures in a River Landscape with Bridge
17 x 22 inches (432 x 559 mm)
Black chalk and ink, heightened with white, and with traces of red chalk, on paper.
2021.182
Gift of Michael Flack and Abigail Sloane in Memory of Samuel and Rose Polin and Louis and Gussie Gerstein.
Notes
Giuseppe Zais worked in the long Venetian tradition of landscape, incorporating motifs that can be traced back to the work of Titian and Domenico Campagnola in the sixteenth century, but which continued in the work of his contemporaries and associates Marco Ricci and Francesco Zuccarelli. These are all seen in this impressive, large drawing, with its prominent foreground tree, bridge and ruins in the middle distance, and mountain peaks and clouds beyond.
