Notes
Corotʼs late, soft style reveals his affinity for photography and the effects it could achieve. Admiring the mediumʼs monochromatic tonal scale, he muted his palette beginning in the 1850s. Here, the indistinct edges of the foliage evoke the way stirring leaves blurred during long exposures. Moreover, his softening of background elements reflects the impact of photographyʼs single focus.
