Notes
Peter Candid belonged to a group of itinerant artists with Northern roots but Italian experience and training, active in the Bavarian court in Munich. One of his primary responsibilities was the designing and planning for the execution of sumptuous tapestries used for decorating the royal residence. This drawing is a study for one in a series of ten tapestries celebrating the accomplishments of the founder of the Bavarian line, Otto von Wittelsbach. The tapestry, which reproduces the design in reverse, is still preserved at the Munich Residenz.
