Notes
Benso was the leading Baroque painter in Genoa in the middle of the seventeenth century, but he also painted many works for the Imperial Abbey of St. Martin at Weingarten in Southern Germany. This drawing, one of his greatest, is a preparatory study for the high altar of the monastery church. It is the first work by the artist to enter the Morgan collection.
