Notes
Sol LeWitt is among the leading Conceptual artists to have emerged from the 1960s. He is perhaps best recognized for his modular sculptures and wall drawings executed by assistants according to a set of written instructions. His works on paper are part of his larger project of exploring concepts through many permutations. Beginning in the early 1980s, he expanded his drawing practice, which was previously dominated by pen and pencil, to include colored gouaches, introducing a new exuberance into his work. In these two late drawings, freely drawn bands of color or shades of black and white undulate and overlap, creating all-over fields of abstract marks that resemble waves.
