Notes
Known primarily for his sculptures and dramatic installations, Jannis Kounellis is associated with the Arte Povera movement that developed in Italy in the late 1960s, which emphasized the use of simple, everyday materials and gestures to create an art closer to life. His extensive personal iconography, which draws on influences as disparate as classical mythology and the industrial revolution, shapes his work in all media. In this drawing, biomorphic forms occupy a field of graffiti-like marks, an allusion, perhaps, to Kounellis's practice of working directly on walls.
