Notes
Celia Paul belongs to the youngest generation of artists loosely grouped under the term School of London, a group devoted to figurative art and to whom Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud were associated early on. Paul is best known for her intimate portraits of family members and people close to her. This poignant image of her friend Annela is typical of Paul's style in which blurred contours, powerful shadows, and the dissolution of forms give the sitter a sense of fragility and mystery.
