Notes
Nathan Oliveira was part of a group of Bay Area painters--which also included Richard Diebenkorn and David Park--who, in the 1950s, combined the bold, painterly style of abstract expressionism with figurative imagery. This striking vision of an isolated mask-like face emerging from a white background exemplifies Oliveira's interest in themes of alienation and psychological conflict, which he often evoked in depictions of the solitary human figure.
