Notes
Schell Lewis's drawing depicts the exterior of the Morgan Library along 36th Street before the 1960 Alexander P. Morgan expansion of the Morgan's campus. At left is Benjamin Wistar Morris's Annex building, which housed a reading room and exhibition gallery, and at right, Pierpont Morgan's 1906 Library constructed by McKim, Mead, and White. The single level passage connecting the two buildings is visible between the trees. In 1960, the corridor was enlarged to two stories, visible in the related sketch [acc. no.]. This element of Alexander Morgan's campaign was removed during the 2006 Renzo Piano expansion project.
