Notes
Susan Rothenberg played an important role in the revival of figurative painting in the United States in the 1980s. This large drawing related to the painting, Biker (1985, Museum of Modern Art, New York), reflects her interest in suggesting motion and speed through a dense network of expressive hatchings. The flurry of small strokes dissolves the figure into the ground in a manner reminiscent of Bonnard or Giacometti. This sheet marks a turning point in Rothenberg's career when she began making preparatory drawings for paintings, having discovered the "magic, generative power" of drawing.
