David Dancing before the Ark

Hubert François Gravelot
1699-1773

David Dancing before the Ark

ca. 1751
2 x 3 5/8 inches (64 x 91 mm)
Pen and brown ink over graphite, on paper; partially incised with the stylus.
1968.15:10

Gift of John F. Fleming.

Notes
Gravelot's design is for an engraved headpiece intended for Book I of Le Franc de Pompignon's "Poésies Sacrées" (Paris : Chaubert, 1751). King David, as described in the biblical Books of Samuel, is shown with his harp, rejoicing at the head of a procession bearing the ark to Jerusalem. This is one of two preparatory drawings, along with 1968.15:11, for a headpiece vignette in the "Poésies Sacrées".
