Apollo(?) Seated Surrounded by Several Figures

Hubert François Gravelot
1699-1773

Apollo(?) Seated Surrounded by Several Figures

3 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches (94 x 133 mm)
Pen and black ink and black chalk, on blue paper; partially incised with stylus.
1968.15:33

Gift of John F. Fleming.

Notes
According to Ruth Kraemer, Gravelot's design "is possibly intended for a vignette or headpiece in a book of poetry. There is another, slightly more finished drawing of the same composition, also on the Roederer mount, at the Houghton Library, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass." A seated classical male figure is shown flanked by two female figures, one of whom appears to be Venus; he extends his hand to Cupid, who stands in front of him; at left, additional female figures are shown seated on clouds.
