Themistocles Asking Protection of Admetus

1738-1740?
5 7/16 x 3 1/8 inches (138 x 79 mm)
Brown ink over red chalk, on paper.
1986.2046

Bequest of Gordon N. Ray, 1987.

Notes
Gravelot's design is preparatory for an illustration to Charles Rollin's "The ancient history of the Egyptians, Carthaginians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes and Persians, Macedonians, and Grecians" (first published in London: Knapton, 1738-1740). The scene depicts Themistocles, his hand resting on an altar, kneeling before King Admetus, with the King's son standing by his side; on the far right, is a young man with two dogs on leash.
