Notes
After graduating from the Yale School of Art in the early 1970s sculptor Don Gummer created large-scale installations inspired by Constructivism and Minimalism. In the 1980s he turned to more organic shapes in freestanding sculptures endowed with a remarkable sense of motion. In preparation for his sculptures, Gummer makes small, gestural watercolors such as Drawing for "Core Belief." Its ladderlike elements, upward rhythm, and the grace with which the top-heavy form rests on a smaller base are characteristic of Gummer's work.
