Notes
A major post-war American artist, Conner was active in San Francisco as a sculptor, draftsman, and filmmaker from the late 1950s on. This early pencil drawing was created while the artist lived in Mexico in 1961-62. Symbols, figures and words are hidden within a network of lines that resemble topographical marks. This sheet shows the formation of Conner's distinctive linear style and is important also as an early manifestation of his interest in religious imagery.
