Notes
Born in Germany, Wolf Kahn immigrated to the United States in 1940 as a teenager. His studies with Hans Hofmann had a lasting effect on his use of color. In the 1950s Kahn was associated with the abstract expressionists, whose influence can still be felt in the energetic strokes and freedom of execution of Stuyvesant Park, a pastel from the late 1960s. Since the beginning of his career, pastel has been Kahn's favorite medium. Taking inspiration primarily from nature, he has become highly popular for his brightly colored, decorative landscapes of rural New England.
