Summary

It is possible that this drawing, which has a black chalk grid for transfer, was created by Giancinto Gimignani (1606-1681), a follower of Pietro da Cortona. Gimignani, a painter and etcher from Pistoia, was active primarily in Rome during the Baroque period, and he was present in the studios of both Cortona and Andrea Sacchi. The present sheet bears a resemblance to other drawings of Old Testament scenes by Gimignani now in the Gabinetto Nazionale delle Stampe, Rome, for example Labano Searching for the Idol Hidden by Rachel (inv. F.C. 127208).
