Notes
Victor Jean Nicolle's relatively small corpus includes many drawings with views of Italy and Rome. He spent two extended periods of time in Italy, from 1787 to 1798 and again from 1806-1811. It was during either the former or latter period when Nicolle created this view of the Grand Canal in Venice. An inscription at the bottom of the sheet indicates that Nicolle sketched the scene from the viewpoint of the Reggio Canal. This sheet is close in style and composition to a second Venetian scene by Nicolle also from the Joseph F. McCrindle Collection (inv. 2009.224).
