Summary

Jan van Huysum never travelled to Italy; his depictions of classical ruins like that in the present sheet reflect his own imagination and the influence of other artists, such as Gaspard Dughet (1615-1675) and the work of Johannes Glauber (1646-1726). Van Huysum generally partitioned his landscapes into divisions between foreground, middle ground, and background. The present sheet reflects this tendency. He also conventionally depicted travelers resting, standing, or on the move, as we see here, representing the vita contemplativa.
