Notes
Frank Stella has been a major figure in American art since the late 1950s when he created black, monochrome paintings whose stark reductionism launched the minimalist movement. In the 1960s and '70s he continued to expand geometric abstraction by exploring various formal strategies, such as the use of shaped canvas and relief. Drawing was crucial throughout this development as Stella made sketches to investigate new formal and conceptual possibilities. This sketch appears to relate to his "Brazilian Series" of 1974-75.
