Jean-François Millet
1814-1875
Study of a Mug
ca. 1840-1850
3 1/2 x 4 3/8 inches
Black chalk on paper.
2004.2
Gift of John M. Thayer.
Notes
While Millet did not produce many candlelit still-lifes of interiors like his contemporaries Albert Lebourg and François Bonvin, he studied everyday objects for the backgrounds of his paintings. This mug, or tankard, is similar to the ceramics found on the mantle in his view of washerwomen or on the shelves of the dairy behind his many butter-churners.
