Inigo Jones
1573-1652
Costume of an Old Man for a Masque
6 x 3 5/8 inches (151 x 91 mm)
Pen and brown ink, with gray wash, on paper.
1982.75:382
Gift of Mrs. Donald M. Oenslager, 1982.
Notes
At base of the drawing is part of an ink sketch of a fantastic head dress. Possibly, this design is for an anti-masque character in Sir William Davenant's "Brittania Triumphans" (1638). See Plate 34, XXXIV, "Designs by Inigo Jones for Masques and Plays at Court," Walpole Society, 1924.
Inscriptions/Markings
Inscribed at lower right in pen and black ink, "C" [This mark is sometimes attributed to Queen Christina of Sweden].
