Brush and off-white and gray oil, and pen and brown ink; on a paper prepared with a brown ground of lead white tinted with yellow-brown ochre and a little red in oil medium; incised with the stylus.

Inscribed on the album page below the design, in brown ink, "De rogo, non de dome extrúendâ senex cogitet (title)/ Trúditúr dies die/ Novaeqúe pergúnt interire Lúnae, Tú secanda marmora/ Locas súb ipsúm fúnús, et sepúlcri/ immemor, strúis Domos" (Day treads upon the heel of day, and new moons haste to wane; yet thou on the grave's verge dost contract for the cutting of marble slabs, and, forgetful of the tomb, dost rear a palace). The text is from Horace, "Odes", Book II, 18, lines 15-19.
