The drawing illustrates the biblical passage of Mathew XXVIII. The figure of the angel is indebted in pose and gesture to the same figure in Benjamin West's painting "The Angel of the Lord Announcing the Resurrection to the Marys at the Sepulchre," 1805, now at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
