1989.25
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Jones.
Notes
This is a full scale study for one of the painted canvas panels in Mowbray's ceiling decoration for the vestibule of the 1924 Benjamin Wistar Morris Annex of the Morgan Library. Two preparatory studies for the vaulted vestibule ceiling are preserved in the Morgan; see 1989.23 and 1989.24.
The panel depicts Cyrus II (the Great), ruler of Achaemenian Empire of ancient Persia from 559-ca. 529 BCE. Cyrus founded and greatly expanded the empire, and was hailed for his virtues as a leader by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus.
