Lorenzo Tiepolo
1736-1776
Head of St. Anne
14 13/16 x 11 1/8 inches (378 x 283 mm)
Black chalk, with touches of red and blue chalk, on paper.
1983.64
Gift of Janos Scholz.
Notes
Watermark: none.
Presumably based on the drawing of an old man recently on the art market (sale, London, Sotheby's, 15 June 1983, lot 91, repr. as by Giovanni Battista; but, in the opinion of Byam Shaw, also by Lorenzo). See his discussion of a similar subject in the Lugt Collection, Paris (The Italian Drawings of the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris, 1983, I, no. 266), which he attributes to Giovanni Battista and which Knox attributes to Domenico, connecting it with the latter's altarpiece Four Olivetan Saints now in the Museo Civico, Verona. Byam Shaw further suggests that the Lugt drawing (as well as those by both sons) is derived from the bronze bust of Seneca by Guido Reni, now in the Museo Arqueologico, Madrid.
