Notes
In 1762 Giambattista Tiepolo, together with his sons Domenico and Lorenzo, journeyed to Madrid at the invitation of King Charles III. Only Domenico would ever leave Spain; Giambattista died there in 1770, and Lorenzo remained in Madrid until his death in 1776. This sheet is a study for an overdoor decoration in stucco in the throne room of the Royal Palace, painted in 1764. It is one of only a very small number of surviving drawings executed during the last eight years of the master's life. --Exhibition Label, from "Tiepolo, Guardi, and Their World: Eighteenth-Century Venetian Drawings"
