Landscape with a Mill, Leaf from a Dismantled Quarto Drawing-Book
Gift of Stephen Spector.
This sheet was formerly part of a sketchbook, the flyleaf of which is inscribed Libro 24 and dated 24 October 1567, which was unbound in 1971. On the basis of inscriptions, Elen suggests there must at one time have been at least thirty-seven such drawing-books by Cibo, most of which would appear to have been composed of single quires. This is one of two drawings from the same dismantled drawing book [see also no. 1980.13:2].
Cibo’s inscription notes that this drawing, dated 10 January 1568, depicts the mill of a M. Filippino.”
Watermark: Bird, fragment (cf. Briquet III, 12157. Rome; 12151. Rome, 1492-1500).
