Description

This drawing was previously considered the work of one of Domenico Campagnola’s followers, or even perhaps a copy of a lost drawing, but Tobias Nickel has identified it as Campagnola’s own work, noting that both the structure of the space and details such as the camels at right can be compared to other drawings by the master.

The additions along the lower edge, in a lighter brown ink, are possibly by a later hand.

Inscriptions/Markings

Watermark: Open crown surmounted by a six-pointed star (cf. Briquet II, 4835. Prague, 1561; Lucca, 1565-66; Rome, 1567-68).
