Gabriel Jacques de Saint-Aubin

Young Woman Standing on the Seat of a Carriage

6 1/2 x 8 15/16 inches (166 x 226 mm)
Black chalk, with black ink and wash, on paper.
1984.7

Purchased on the Sunny Crawford von Bülow Fund 1978.

Notes
Watermark: fragment of a coat of arms surmounted by a crown within a circle.
The traditional identification of the subject as Mlle Duthé, the famous courtesan who recorded her adventures for posterity in "Mémoires secrets", is not plausible.

Inscribed on verso at lower center in graphite, "dessin J.(?) S. Aubin acheté à [illegible]".
